Exactly What Is A Migraine Headache And What Are Its Signs And Symptoms?



One of the commonest migraine symptoms is an acute throbbing pain which is generally situated on only one side of the head near to the temple. Unlike normal headaches, migraines are also often accompanied by additional symptoms which include sensitivity to light and noise, nausea and occasionally vomiting.

Migraines are relatively common and affect about 10% of the population of America, or over 28 million Americans. They are also far more often seen in women than in men (about three times more women suffer from migraine headaches) and can also be see occasionally in children.

Although migraine headaches are so common and often very painful with attacks lasting anything from a few hours to two or three days, only roughly half of all sufferers ever consult their physician and the remainder elect to suffer in silence.

Migraines had long been thought to be resulted from a of dilation of the blood vessels in the head but, despite the fact that there is no general agreement, medical opinion seems to be moving away from this theory in favor of a genetic cause for this problem. It is now believed that migraines results from the interaction of brain chemicals like serotonin with the nerve cells. At this time however the truth is that we really do not know what cause migraines.

In fact there are two forms of the condition, the first of which is referred to as 'classical migraine', which is characterized by an accompanying 'aura'. In this case 'aura' is used to refer to visual light effects that are experienced immediately prior to the arrival of a headache including such things as bright light spots and flashing lights. In some people a complete loss of vision may be experienced for some minutes before the arrival of the headache.

The second type of migraine is simply a migraine with no 'aura'.

Just as we do not know what causes a migraine headache, we also have very little idea about just what triggers an attack, though there are several factors which do appear likely to trigger an attack in sufferers. For instance, too much sleep seems to be one factor and so does missing meals or eating particular foods like cheese.

Hormonal factors are also thought to influence both the onset of attacks and their severity and this is evidenced the increased incidence of migraines in women. This in part is thought to be because of the effect of estrogen on the blood vessels and it has been noted in some studies that there is a connection between contraceptive pills (which contains estrogen) and migraine headaches.

Just to confuse matters however studies have also demonstrated that everyday activities such as walking up stairs can trigger a migraine attack, as can exposure to heat or cold, loud noises, flashing lights and occasionally stress.

Luckily, there are various migraine treatments available today, though no one treatment has proved to be really effective in all cases. One thing which we do know though is that over-the-counter medicines are seldom effective and, if you are unlucky enough to suffer from migraine headaches, then you would be best advised to ask your doctor for help in finding an answer that works for you.
